Care homes and community hospitals benefit greatly from the use of video consultation services to provide specialist assessment and treatment for residents and patients.

It can help improve the management of behavioural and psychiatric symptoms of dementia. It can also improve recognition and treatment of functional disorders and to help with end-of-life and palliative care for elderly patients.

The Scottish Centre for Telehealth and Telecare facilitated VC service has been in use  since 2011.

The benefits of this innovative service model of care are:

  • Improved access to remote decision support for patients with mental health issues
  • improved access to specialist care
  • Reduction of antipsychotic medication
  • Some patients can be managed with behavioural care plans and staff are more confident when dealing with patients with mental health issues
  • reduction of the costs associated with hospital admissions and transportation
  • reduced staff and carer travel
